obama and speaker boehner spoke on the phone yesterday for the first time in days. both men agreed not to publicly characterize how the conversation went. but the stalemate in negotiations entered new territory yesterday with treasury secretary tim geithner suggesting the white house is ready to go off the cliff if republicans refuse to raise taxes on the 2%. >> if republicans do not agree to that, is the administration prepared to go over the fiscal cliff? >> oh, absolutely. again, there's no prospect to an agreement that doesn't involve those rates going up on the top 2% of the wealthiest americans -- remember, it's only 2%. the size of the problem in some sense is so large, it can't be solved without rates going up as part of that. again, i think there's broad recognition of that reality now. >> one fallback option republicans are reportedly considering is to accept tax cuts for the middle class, allow rates to go up for the wealthiest, and then start the fight over again during debt limit talks early next year. yesterday at a business roundtable of ceos, president obama took a

achieved nothing this week. this is "your money." president obama's offer to avoid the fiscal cliff was laughed at by republicans last week. this week the gop counter offered. theirs, extend tax cuts to the everyone including the rich. $2.2 million in areas from closing loopholes and deductions, savings on health care and cuts in discretionary spending. other than that, no specifics. president obama said the gop must agree to one thing to get anywhere close to a deal. >> we have to see the rates on the top 2% go up. we're not going to get a deal without it. >> speaker boehner fired back. >> this week we made a good faith offer to avert the fiscal crisis. now we need a response from the white house. we can't negotiate with ourselves. >> here we are just weeks away from going over the fiscal cliff. you probably wonder what's going on in these houses in washington. they put themselves and their political gains first and put their future in prosperity second. hey, you voted them in. remember what happened the last time washington got into a budget battle like this? lawmakers put a band

negotiations? not so much, at least in the past few days. we know president obama and house speaker john boehner had a one-on-one meeting, right, on sunday, their first since mid-november. what were the details from that meeting and from the ongoing discussions? they're not really -- both sides are not really being forthcoming with what the substance of those conversations, both sides yesterday, the white house and the republican leadership put out statements. they're essentially the same. i'll read just one from boehner's press secretary. discussions with the white house are taking place but we have no detail to share about the substance of those conversations. the republican offer made last week remains the republican offer and we continue to wait for the president to identify the spending cuts he's willing to make as part of the balanced approach he promised the american people. so, of course, that coming from the republican side, the president obviously saying he's waiting for something, too, john. he's waiting for the republicans to identify the specific details of that $800 billion

remains to the upside. back to you. connell: thank you. dagen: president obama pushing his plan for dealing with the fiscal cliff in detroit. connell: peter barnes is in d.c. with the very latest on all of this. peter: neither side is dishing on the meeting yesterday afternoon. both sides issuing identical statement that said "the lines of communication remain open." the best strategy for republicans may be to swallow some higher tax rates, get that issue off the table and then come back to entitlement reform early next year when the president asks for an increase in the debt ceiling. then republicans will have a little more leverage. >> a lot of people are putting forth a theory. i think it has merit. you give the president the 2% increase that he is talking about. there is a growing body. i believe that maybe the best route for us to take. peter: this afternoon, the president will speak in detroit. he will be speaking at and engine company, detroit diesel. obama aides said the company will also announce $100 million new investment and production as part of the president visit.
